Dislocation Allowance (DLA): The PCS Money Nobody Tells You About

Updated 2026-06-10

Every PCS move comes with a one-time, tax-free payment called the Dislocation Allowance — meant to cover the costs the government doesn't reimburse directly (deposits, curtains, that first grocery run). In 2026 it's worth thousands of dollars, and you usually have to know to ask for it.

2026 DLA amounts (examples)

GradeWith dependentsWithout dependents
E-1 through E-6$3,548.02$2,389.42 (E-5 rate; varies slightly by grade)

Rates rise with pay grade (senior officers receive more) and are set each calendar year — the figures above are from the official 2026 DTMO table effective January 1, 2026. Look up your exact grade on the DTMO DLA page.

The rules that matter

Stack it with the rest of your PCS money

DLA is separate from travel per diem, mileage (MALT), and Temporary Lodging Expense (TLE). A typical E-5 family PCS can put $4,000–$6,000+ of combined entitlements in play — money that softens the out-of-pocket hit of housing costs at the new duty station.
