O-1E, O-2E, O-3E: Prior-Enlisted Officer Pay Explained (2026)

Updated 2026-06-08

Commission after enlisted service and the military doesn't reset your paycheck. With over 4 years of prior enlisted (or warrant) service, you're paid on the special O-1E / O-2E / O-3E scales — worth several hundred dollars a month more than standard O-1/O-2/O-3 pay.

How much the "E" is worth

O-1 vs O-1E$5,222$5,783+$561
O-2 vs O-2E$6,618$6,828+$210
O-3 vs O-3E$8,125$8,125+$0

You also keep your full years of service for pay purposes — a prior E-5 who commissions at the 8-year mark starts as an O-1E in the "over 8" column, not at the left edge of the table.

Who qualifies

The E-scales require more than 4 years of active service as an enlisted member or warrant officer before commissioning. At O-4 and above the E-scales end — everyone merges onto the standard officer table (your years of service still carry over).

Model your commissioning jump — compare O-1E pay against your current enlisted pay.

Frequently asked questions

What is O-1E pay?

O-1E is the pay scale for O-1s with more than 4 years of prior enlisted or warrant service. Over 8 years it pays $5,783/month versus $5,222 for a standard O-1.

Who qualifies for the E pay scales?

Commissioned officers with more than 4 years of active enlisted or warrant officer service. The scales exist for O-1E, O-2E, and O-3E only.

Do I keep my years of service when I commission?

Yes — your pay entry base date carries over, so you enter the officer table at your real years-of-service column.
