BAH With vs Without Dependents: What's the Difference?

Updated 2026-06-08

Every BAH rate comes in two versions: with dependents and without dependents. The with-dependents rate is higher — often $200–$600+ more per month — but it does not change based on how many dependents you have.

How the two rates work

For each pay grade and location, the Department of Defense publishes one "with dependents" rate and one "without dependents" rate. If you have any qualifying dependent (a spouse or child), you receive the higher rate. Having three children pays the same BAH as having one.

How much more is the with-dependents rate?

The gap varies by grade and location, but the with-dependents rate is typically a few hundred dollars per month higher. Junior enlisted members usually see the largest percentage difference. Enter your ZIP code and toggle dependent status in the calculator to see the exact difference for your situation.
