Military Special & Incentive Pays: The 2026 Guide
Beyond basic pay and allowances, dozens of special and incentive pays reward specific duties, skills, and hardships. Here are the ones most members actually see, with 2026 amounts.
The common ones
| Special pay | 2026 monthly amount | Who gets it |
|---|---|---|
| Family Separation Allowance (FSA) | $300 | Away from dependents 30+ consecutive days (deployment, unaccompanied tour) |
| Hostile Fire / Imminent Danger Pay | up to $225 | Designated danger areas; IDP prorated by qualifying days |
| Hazardous Duty Incentive Pay (HDIP) | $150 | Demolition, toxic fuels, flight deck and other hazardous duties |
| Parachute (Jump) Pay | $150 / $225 HALO | Airborne-status members; higher rate for military free-fall |
| Diving Duty Pay | up to $340 | Qualified divers, by qualification level |
| Aviation Incentive Pay (Flight Pay) | $125–$1,000 | Rated officers by years of aviation service; career enlisted flyers $150–$400 |
| Career Sea Pay | up to ~$805 | Assigned to sea duty, scales with grade and cumulative sea time |
| Submarine Duty Pay | $75–$600 | Submariners, by grade and years |
| Foreign Language Proficiency Pay | up to ~$500 | Tested proficiency in needed languages; more for multiple languages |
Three rules that matter
- They're taxable — unlike BAH/BAS, special pays are subject to federal income tax and FICA... unless you're in a combat zone, where the CZTE makes them federally tax-free (enlisted fully; officers capped).
- They stack — a deployed airborne soldier can draw FSA + IDP + jump pay simultaneously ($675/month on top of basic pay and allowances).
- They start and stop with orders — check your LES the month after any status change; missing start/stop actions are among the most common pay errors.
Bonuses are separate
Enlistment, reenlistment (SRB), and retention bonuses are lump-sum bonuses, not monthly special pays — they're also taxable (and also combat-zone excludable if earned in a qualifying month).

What is Family Separation Allowance?
FSA pays $300/month when you're away from your dependents for more than 30 consecutive days on orders — deployments, unaccompanied tours, or long TDYs.
Are special pays taxable?
Yes — special and incentive pays are taxable (unlike BAH/BAS), except in a designated combat zone where the combat-zone tax exclusion applies.
Can special pays stack?
Yes. Qualifying for several at once (e.g., FSA + danger pay + jump pay) pays all of them simultaneously.
